Kenton, Ohio
The Project:
Detroit Street is one of the most heavily traveled roadways in the City of Kenton, Ohio, carrying significant daily traffic and approximately 20% truck traffic. Years of heavy use had broken down the base layers of the roadway, leaving the corridor in need of full reconstruction along with pedestrian and utility improvements.
The Challenge:
A project of this scale required substantial funding before construction could start. However, roadway reconstruction, pedestrian improvements, and utility replacements each carried separate costs, applications, and eligibility requirements. Coordinating those efforts demanded both technical knowledge and a clear funding strategy.
How We Helped:
Choice One Engineering’s in-house funding specialist developed and executed a comprehensive funding strategy for the City of Kenton, identifying the right mix of grant and loan programs and preparing applications to position the City competitively. That work resulted in more than $4.6 million secured across six funding sources to fund all components of the project. Located within Kenton’s Historic District, the project also reclaimed historic slate sidewalks and gravel street materials, making them available to the public and helping preserve a connection to the corridor’s history.
The Result:
By securing more than $4.6 million across six funding programs, Choice One helped the City of Kenton stretch its local dollars further and deliver meaningful improvements to one of its most critical corridors.
