The Project:
As residential growth picked up in Fairborn, the City knew Yellow Springs–Fairfield Road needed to evolve too. The vision? A reconstructed corridor featuring 5,267 feet of resurfaced pavement, new turn lanes, sidewalk and multi-use path additions, and drainage improvements.
The Challenge:
Early in the process, the City faced a significant design and constructability challenge.
The city’s original plan was to build the entire multi-use path on the north side of the road, requiring right-of-way acquisition from 28 private properties, and a bigger budget. Additionally, a fire station along the road also meant that traffic had to be maintained throughout construction.
How We Helped:
After reviewing the initial layout with the City, Choice One Engineering was able to make a subtle yet impactful change. By moving part of the multi-use path to the south side of the street, the team was able to save the city $200,000 in property acquisition costs along with significant construction costs. We also worked with the City to design a phased construction plan that kept traffic moving and the fire station accessible from project start to finish.
The Result:
Residents of Fairborn now enjoy a safer, multi-modal corridor, all delivered while minimizing unnecessary cost or community disruption.
