The Project:
The City of Riverside knew Woodman Drive had a problem. Carrying over 25,000 vehicles daily, the four-lane divided corridor felt more like an interstate freeway than a city street. The City commissioned a full reconstruction of 2,300 feet to address the fast speeds, aging drainage infrastructure, limited pedestrian access, and a persistent crash history. Improvements included modern traffic signals, a multi-use path, sidewalk connections, and improved lighting.
The Challenge:
Improving a high-volume arterial is never simple. This effort was further complicated by a separate consultant simultaneously designing the adjacent US-35 interchange, which had to be completed first. Maintaining corridor function required a carefully sequenced nine-phase Maintenance of Traffic plan that preserved continuous two-way travel throughout construction. And probably the single biggest challenge is figuring out a way to pay for it all.
How We Helped:
Choice One Engineering led the project from survey through design for the corridor upgrade, coordinating closely with ODOT and the US-35 interchange design team to keep improvements moving forward smoothly. A carefully phased maintenance of traffic plan helped minimize disruptions for the thousands of drivers who use the corridor each day. Choice One also helped the city secure $6 million in state and federal funding, helping bring the project to life.
The Result:
The City of Riverside and its residents now benefit from a safer, more functional corridor that has earned strong community support since delivery.
